LONI High Performance Computing Workshop

HPC @ LSU will hold a Parallel Programming Workshop on June 4 - 6 in Johnston 338 at LSU in Baton Rouge.

This workshop will cover concepts of Parallel Programming and Message Passing Interface (MPI) Programming.

Schedule

  • June 4: Parallel Programming Concepts
In the morning, the attendees will learn various parallel programming concepts such as decomposition and load balancing through experiments and group exercises. The afternoon program will focus on how those concepts work when parallelizing example problems of different nature.
    Time Topic
    8:00 - 8:30 Registration
    8:30 - 10:00 Programming Concept I
    10:00 - 10:15 Break
    10:15 - 12:00 Programming Concept II
    12:00 - 1:00 Lunch
    1:00 - 2:30 Example Development I
    2:30 - 2:45 Break
    2:45 - 4:30 Example Development II
  • June 5: Code Development
On the second day the main objective is to learn how to write parallel programs with Message Passing Interface (MPI). As hands-on exercises, the attendees will work on converting the examples problems discussed on the first day afternoon into real MPI programs.
    Time Topic
    8:00 - 9:45 Programming with MPI I and hands-on
    9:45 - 10:00 Break
    10:00 - 11:45 Programming with MPI II and hands-on
    11:45 - 12:45 Lunch
    12:45 - 2:30 Programming with MPI III and hands-on
    2:30 - 2:45 Break
    2:45 - 4:30 Exercise
  • June 6: Performance optimization
The main topic on the third day is how to make parallel programs run faster. The attendees will be working on optimizing their MPI programs from the previous day.
    Time Topic
    8:00 - 9:45 Optimization I and hands-on
    9:45 - 10:00 Break
    10:00 - 11:45 Optimization II and hands-on
    11:45 - 12:45 Lunch
    12:45 - 2:15 MPI/OpenMP Hybrid Programming and PGI Accelerator
    2:15 - 4:30 Wrap Up and Exercise
